Announcing the establishment of Nghe An Eye Hospital
This morning, December 25, Nghe An Department of Health held a ceremony to announce the establishment of Nghe An Eye Hospital and summarize 5 years of work in preventing blindness and treating eye diseases. After 5 years of implementing the work of preventing blindness and treating eye diseases, Nghe An is now one of the leading provinces in the North Central region in eye care for the people. Many eye diseases that cause blindness have been eliminated, the backlog of blindness has been significantly reduced, many high-tech technologies have been widely applied in medical examination and treatment, and a network of specialized teams has been established from the provincial to the communal level. The blindness rate in the group of people 50 years of age and older has decreased from 4.2% to 3.8%. The cataract rate has decreased from 2.55% to 2.2%. Annually, more than 7,000 cataract surgeries are performed, achieving a coverage rate of 2,300 cases/million people/year, meeting the requirements set by WHO.

In the past 5 years, the whole province has performed surgery to bring light to 35,680 people blind due to cataract (reaching a rate of 60% of blind people having surgery), of which tens of thousands of blind patients are poor people, ethnic minorities in remote areas. In addition, the Refractive Error Management System in schools has been formed and operated stably with close coordination between Health, Education and Training and family. Diabetic retinopathy has been detected early and blindness prevention interventions have been put into regular operation. In particular, many advanced techniques in the treatment of eye diseases have been successfully applied and put into routine operation such as: Phaco surgery, lacrimal nasal anastomosis, lacrimal canaliculata, amniotic membrane transplantation to treat corneal ulcers, pterygium autograft, diabetic retinal laser, YAG laser, AB ultrasound, fluorescein angiography... creating favorable conditions for patients to access high-quality services.
The Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in eye examination and treatment in the period 2008 - 2012.

Based on the need for eye care for people in the province and the region, the Provincial People's Committee has decided to upgrade the Nghe An Eye Center to Nghe An Eye Hospital with a scale of 100 beds. Speaking at the hospital's inauguration ceremony, on behalf of the provincial leaders, comrade Le Xuan Dai congratulated the hospital's medical staff and asked the hospital to coordinate with departments and branches to speed up the construction of the new hospital, in parallel with continuing to deploy many new techniques to serve the people. At the same time, taking advantage of the attention and support of the Vietnam Ophthalmological Association, the Central Eye Hospital and international organizations for the Prevention of Blindness, continue to help the ophthalmology sector of Nghe An province in training, equipment and facilities so that Nghe An Eye Hospital can increasingly develop to be worthy of being the leading ophthalmology hospital of the North Central high-tech medical center.
