Video of North Korean soldier being shot while crossing border released
The United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea has just released a video recording a North Korean soldier being shot by his comrades while trying to cross the border.
The video is dated November 13 at 3:11 p.m. The North Korean soldier is in critical condition and is being treated at a South Korean military hospital. The soldier is in his 20s, weighs 60kg and is about 1.7m tall. He survived after being shot more than 40 times.
In the video, a North Korean soldier is seen limping across the border of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) while his comrades are chasing him. The soldier's rank and identity are unknown.
According to the UNC, the video is evidence that the 1953 inter-Korean armistice agreement was violated when North Korea fired across the border as well as across the military demarcation line (MDL).
The video is divided into 5 parts, but only lasts about 7 minutes, Dailymail reported.
Starting at 3:11 p.m. local time, the defecting North Korean soldier drove a jeep at high speed toward the military demarcation line and appeared to get stuck in a trench.
In the second part, at 3:14, North Korean soldiers rush towards the defector. In the third part, the moment the armistice agreement is violated, when a North Korean soldier shoots at the defector and even a North Korean soldier crosses the MDL before realizing his mistake and retreating.
The fourth part of the video shows a group of North Korean soldiers seemingly gathering to resolve the situation. The final part of the video shows South Korean soldiers slowly approaching the fleeing soldier and pulling him to safety.
"The key finding of the investigation team is that the North Korean military violated the armistice agreement by firing across the MDL and crossing the boundary," Chad Carroll, director of public affairs for the UN Command, told reporters.
The video does not show the moment the fugitive was shot and collapsed near the concrete wall.
The South Korean military said more than 40 bullets were fired at the defector, from pistols and AK-47s. In a separate press conference this morning (November 22), surgeon Lee Guk-jong said the North Korean soldier suffered multiple injuries and was recovering but needed further treatment.
