Norwegian scientists have developed a method of mixing liquid nanoclay with sand, allowing plant seeds to be sown in the desert after 7 hours.

This soil can be planted in just 7 hours.

By 2045, 135 million people could lose their homes and livelihoods to desertification.

Every year, an area of farmland the size of half the UK is lost to desertification. But a new technology is turning deserts into green land.

Liquid Nano Clay (LNC) is made from microscopic clay particles mixed with water, a method that helps hold sand, water and nutrients.

"When you add liquid nanoclay, that's when you bind the sand grains together. You can see the clumps here, it's not individual grains of sand. When we add this compound to sandy soil, you can grow anything," said inventor Kristian Olesen.

It can take up to seven years to turn sand into fertile soil, but this soil can be planted in just seven hours. Growing crops in the desert requires a lot of water. In this test, the liquid nanoclay reduced water use by 50%.
