Canon Vietnam factory workers on strike
With a salary of 2,500,000 VND - 3,200,000 VND/month, hundreds of workers at the Canon factory said they did not earn enough to live on, so they went on strike to demand a pay increase and reduced working hours.
To protect their rights, hundreds of Canon factory workers went on strike.
According to some workers at the Canon factory, they have to work 9 hours a day, but are not paid overtime. Meanwhile, according to state regulations, overtime must be paid to workers and must be agreed by them. However, at this Canon factory, they do not comply and are forced to work overtime. Every month, they have to work 2 extra Saturdays and only have 2 Saturdays off, but these 2 working days are not paid overtime...
Present among the striking workers, Nguyen Thi L. (23 years old, from Luong Son district, Hoa Binh province), shared: “We workers work all month, without a single day off, and in total, we only earn 3.2 million VND/month. But I took a day off because I was too tired, and 200,000 VND was deducted immediately. Meanwhile, our monthly attendance allowance is only 100,000 VND/month.”
The union is an organization that protects workers' rights, but when workers go on strike, they don't show up.
According to our records, although there were hundreds of workers gathered at the factory gate to strike, demanding their rights, for hours there was not a single person who stood up to take responsibility and protect the rights of the workers. Not even the factory union had anyone.
According to Mr. Kambe Makoto - Senior Director of Planning and Organization Department of Canon Vietnam Co., Ltd., the factory will not increase salaries because Canon is a company with good benefits and salaries in the industrial park.
