The mummy was wrapped in string and placed in a cardboard box. It was discovered early in the morning by sanitation workers who were cleaning near an archaeological site in the city of Trujillo, northwestern Peru.

"It looked like any cardboard box thrown on the street. But when I opened it, I was stunned to see the skull staring at me. I didn't know it was an ancient mummy, I just thought someone had been murdered and immediately called the police," news.com.au quoted worker Otilio Padilla Miramontes as saying yesterday.

According to a police spokesman, they determined that this was not a fresh skeleton. The mummy was 915 years old and was likely stolen from the archaeological site of Chan Chan, which was the capital of the Chimú dynasty, which existed on the west coast of Peru in 1100 AD.

The mummy was transferred to the Peruvian Cultural Agency for further examination.
