Dong Van Commune (Tan Ky) is a locality that suffers a lot of damage every year due to heat, including raw sugarcane. As a remote commune, water resources for production are scarce, especially in the hot season, so many sugarcane areas cannot avoid withering, even dying.

Mr. Le Van Quy - agricultural officer of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, in charge of the area, said: In Dong Van commune, there are 250 hectares of raw sugarcane. The intense heat has caused most of the sugarcane area to dry out and wither. The current task of the agricultural officer, in addition to guiding people to monitor and check for pests and diseases, is to encourage people to prepare fertilizer sources for the second fertilization of sugarcane when it rains.

Despite the hot weather, each agricultural officer must stay in the field every day to grasp the development of sugarcane and pests and diseases. When the weather is cool and rainy, farmers are advised to peel off old sugarcane leaves to help the sugarcane grow taller, limit pests and diseases, white-backed planthoppers; at the same time, fertilize, weed and mound the base. Currently, there are no worrying pests and diseases on sugarcane, only a few areas are infected with aphids at a low rate, farmers have promptly handled them.

Over the past several months, the intense heat has caused many Tan Ky farmers to worry about drought-affected sugarcane. Cultivating nearly 21 hectares of raw sugarcane, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuat - a farmer in Mai Tan hamlet, Nghia Hoan commune (Tan Ky) said: After many years of growing sugarcane, despite growing on a large area, his sugarcane still achieves an average yield of 90 tons/ha every year.

Realizing that the weather has been hot recently, to prevent pests and diseases from arising, Mr. Tuat regularly visits the fields, paying close attention to the leaf sheaths of the sugarcane. At the same time, to cope with the current weather, Mr. Tuat also keeps the sugarcane moist by taking advantage of all water sources from ponds, lakes, and ditches to irrigate regularly, providing enough water for the sugarcane to grow.

Mr. Tuat said: “Every day, every morning I visit the sugarcane field, if I detect pests, I will immediately prevent them. At this time, I have to take good care of the sugarcane, if I let the sugarcane dry out, along with pests, the yield will decrease. When it rains, I immediately plow the roots, fertilize, and raise the beds to keep the moisture, help the plants have good roots to develop, and limit the sugarcane from falling when there is a strong wind.”

Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, said: “At this time, raw sugarcane is in the development stage, sugarcane growers need to pay attention to checking for pests, especially aphids. During April and May, many sugarcane areas were infected with white cotton aphids, agricultural staff took the initiative to prevent and control them, along with the hot weather, so the aphids have decreased, however, there is still a risk of spreading when the weather changes. In the current severe hot weather conditions, sugarcane growers take advantage of all possible water sources to irrigate sugarcane, and at the same time apply fertilizer for the second time to help sugarcane grow strongly when the weather is rainy. According to the regular schedule, the agricultural staff organize field visits with farmers to promptly detect diseases on sugarcane and have appropriate prevention methods.”

Maintenance of production lines and vehicles

Along with farmers actively taking care of sugarcane, sugarcane transport vehicle owners are taking advantage of the opportunity to repair and maintain their vehicles, preparing for the upcoming sugarcane harvest season. Currently, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company has contracted 180 trucks to transport raw sugarcane from the fields to the factory, so repairing vehicles to ensure safety during transportation is very necessary.

Mr. Manh - a car owner in Tan An commune, who specializes in receiving sugarcane transportation contracts for the company, said: During the sugarcane harvest season, the vehicle must transport at full capacity and weight every day, so during the break before the harvest season, I have to check the entire vehicle, invest in parts that need to be replaced, and try to fix parts that can be repaired, so that when the harvest season comes, it will operate safely and smoothly. "Every year, after each sugarcane harvest season, we have to invest in repairing the vehicle in the best way. Therefore, this is an important time for vehicle owners," said Mr. Manh.
