Minimize damage to sugarcane during drought

Many farmers are "worried" with their dried-up sugarcane fields, and sugarcane care is even more difficult because the water in dams and streams in the area is gradually drying up.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, a sugarcane grower in Nghia Phuc commune, said: “My family has been growing sugarcane since the Song Con Sugar Factory started operating. Currently, I am growing and taking care of 3 hectares of sugarcane. Since May, the continuous hot weather has caused the sugarcane to wilt and grow slowly. “Like previous years, to protect the area of ​​sugarcane that has just been harvested, my family hired a plow to plow and raise the base of the crop to keep the soil moist. At the same time, we clean the grass and fertilize the sugarcane so that it can grow well before the hot season,” Mr. Long shared.

According to Mr. Nguyen Sy Hai - Head of raw material production department (Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company), for the raw sugarcane area, for a long time, it has been difficult to fight drought, because the irrigation system is still inadequate, especially in the highlands, so in years of severe drought, many sugarcane areas dry up and burn. However, some households in Tan Ky have invested in drilling wells to pump water to irrigate sugarcane on hot days, which is quite effective.

Mr. Hai recommends that to minimize the damage caused by drought to the yield and quality of sugarcane, it is necessary to apply underground plowing in the stage of preparing new land for planting and underground plowing for sugarcane after harvest to break the long-cultivated soil layer, helping the sugarcane roots to grow deeply, absorb groundwater, retain water when it rains and more nutrients.

For sugarcane fields that have grown taller, farmers need to remove all old leaves, clean the grass, and keep the sugarcane fields airy and free of pests. Recently, the sugarcane raw material area has been affected by locusts and black beetles that damage sugarcane. The company has used a motor sprayer to kill locusts; for black beetles, raw material area staff have instructed farmers on how to prevent them by using chemical pesticides.

Measures to prevent black beetles from harming sugarcane: If you actively water, you can flood the field for 20-30 minutes so that the beetles can come up and catch them. Or for sugarcane fields that have been harvested, soak for 5-6 days to kill the larvae. Manual measures: Black beetles harming sugarcane mature in April-May-June, and can be caught by manpower. Use one of the granular chemicals to apply on both sides of the sugarcane base, then mound it into a strip of soil.

In addition, farmers should also choose thesugarcaneNo signs of infection, drought tolerance, good root regeneration. Regarding fertilizers, it is recommended to use organic microbial fertilizers or sludge to help improve the lack of humus in the soil, significantly reducing the adverse effects of drought. Currently, the Company is supporting sugarcane growers with sugarcane sludge and providing loans for fertilizers with post-payment; support policies for new sugarcane planting areas.

Production line maintenance before pressing season

According to the plan, in early November, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company will start the sugarcane production line for the 2023 - 2024 crop. To ensure the new sugarcane pressing season, in addition to stabilizing the raw material area, the company is currently focusing on investing in repairing and maintaining the entire production line in the most thoughtful way.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Deputy Director of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company informed: "The maintenance work is currently being carried out by technical workers, to prepare for this year's sugarcane pressing season as soon as the Board of Directors directs. At the same time, the vehicles transporting sugarcane from the fields to the factory are also being maintained and repaired by the vehicle owners... When the harvest season begins, the factory will sign contracts with the vehicle owners to transport sugarcane for farmers to the factory for production in the most timely manner".

Currently, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company is actively coordinating with local authorities and Party committees in the raw material districts of Tan Ky, Anh Son, Con Cuong, Yen Thanh, etc. to promote propaganda and mobilize people to properly implement sugarcane care plans; avoid pests and diseases that affect productivity, output and product quality as well as ensure income for farmers.

The Company's sugarcane raw material area remains stable at nearly 5,000 hectares; the factory's operating capacity is 3,300 tons of sugarcane per day. However, thanks to the investment in new technology sugar boilers from the previous pressing season, product quality has been improved, meeting consumer demand and competing with the market.
