At that time, a container truck with license plate 16H - 1233 towing container 16R - 5314 was traveling from Hanoi to Vinh when it suddenly swerved to the left side of the road and crashed into a truck with license plate 37S 4097 parked on the side of the road at km 405 + 100 (south of Giat bridge).

After hitting the truck, the container continued to push the truck 50m, hitting the truck with license plate 37N - 3885 of Chau Hoa bus company which was parked in the yard and all three vehicles were damaged, the sides and front of the truck were crushed. The container truck driver (identity unknown) promptly removed all the front and rear license plates to hide his whereabouts. However, a loophole that the bus company did not know was that the back of the tractor still had a dusty license plate showing that the vehicle had license plate 16H 1233. According to many people who witnessed the accident, at the time of the accident, the container truck was traveling at a terrifying speed and the cause of the accident was possibly due to the driver falling asleep.
