Big shock at the Olympics, the reigning world champion lost heavily despite 71% possession
A surprise happened in the 2024 Olympic women's football semi-finals when the reigning world champion lost heavily. The two teams that reached the final were determined.
Last night and early this morning (August 7), the two semi-finals of the women's soccer tournament at the 2024 Olympics took place. The US women's team met Germany, an opponent they had defeated 4-1 in the group stage. However, in this semifinal rematch, there was no rain of goals. In the first half, the US women's team dominated the game with 6 shots and a possession rate of up to 58%, while Germany had no finishing situations.
The second half was more exciting. The US women's team continued to dominate. Despite a total of 12 more shots, no goals were scored. The match then went into extra time.

Sophia Smith broke the deadlock for the US women's team with a goal in the 95th minute. After a pass from her teammate, Smith broke through. Despite being marked by a player and facing goalkeeper Berger, Smith still finished accurately into the German net. This was also the only goal of the match, helping the US women's team reach the final round.
In the other semi-final, the Brazilian women's team created a big shock when they defeated the reigning world champions, Spain 4-2. In the group stage, Brazil lost to Spain 0-2. However, in the semi-final, the Samba girls showed a different side.
Brazil led 2-0 in the first half despite Spain having 64% possession. Brazil scored in the 6th minute through an own goal by Irene Paredes. In the 45+4 minute, Gabi Portilho doubled Brazil's lead.

With 2 goals to their credit, Brazil played more confidently in the second half. The scenario in this half was similar to the first 45 minutes. Spain had 71% possession but Brazil was still the team to score first. Adriana scored in the 71st minute to help Brazil widen the gap to 3-0. It was not until the 85th minute that Salma Paralluelo scored to reduce the score to 1-3 for Spain.
In the extra time, each team scored another goal. In the end, Brazil won 4-2 to reach the final against the United States - the team that just beat Germany 1-0 - on August 10. The Spanish team, despite having an average of 71% possession, still had to accept defeat. They will meet Germany on August 9 in the Bronze Medal match./.
