Cuba completes election of First Secretary of Communist Party
On the morning of April 19, Cuba time, or the evening of April 19, Vietnam time, the 7th National Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba closed after announcing the results of the election of the new Central Executive Committee and the Party leadership.

According to the election results, First Secretary of the Party Central Committee Raúl Castro was re-elected to the top leadership position of the Communist Party of Cuba.
The final plenary session of the Congress also re-elected José Ramón Machado to continue as Second Secretary.
Other members of the new 17-member Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba are: Miguel Díaz-Canel (First Vice President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers), Esteban Lazo (President of the National Assembly), Ramiro Valdés (Vice President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers), Salvador Valdés (Vice President of the Council of State), Leopoldo Cintra (Minister of the Armed Forces) and Bruno Rodríguez (Minister of Foreign Affairs).
Also present were Marino Murillo (Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Economy), Mercedes López (Secretary of the Havana Party Committee), Álvaro López (First Deputy Minister, Chief of the General Staff of the Ministry of the Armed Forces), and Ramón Espinosa (Deputy Minister of the Armed Forces).
The five new members elected for the first time to the Politburo are: Ulises Guilarte (Secretary General of the Labor Federation), Roberto Morales (Minister of Health), Miriam Nicado (Member of the Council of State, Rector of the National University of Informatics UCI), Teresa Amarelle (Secretary General of the Women's Union) and Marta Ayala (Director of the Institute for Research in Genetics and Biotechnology).
In the presence of about 1,200 delegates and guests, First Secretary Raúl Castro announced the list of 142 new Central Committee members, with an average age of 54.5 years.
After three days of discussion, the Congress adopted five resolutions on five reports presented to the Congress in the first plenary session and four subsequent group sessions.
These reports include the Congress's key report; Definition of Cuba's socialist socio-economic model; development plan until 2030, vision, pillars and strategic areas; assessment of the implementation of the policies approved at the 6th Party Congress and steps to update these policies for the next 5 years; assessment of the implementation of the Party's work objectives determined from the 1st National Conference in January 2012.
The 7th National Congress is of utmost importance to the Communist Party of Cuba, the country and the people of Cuba, in the context of this Caribbean country gradually opening up after officially normalizing relations with the United States in late 2014, ending more than half a century of embargo.
