The Department of Performing Arts will seek opinions and plan to replace the swimsuit competition with sportswear or other costumes in beauty contests in Vietnam.

Before the news that the Miss America 2019 pageant will remove the bikini competition, Mr. Le Minh Tuan - Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that as part of the content of the conference to collect opinions on the draft new decree taking place on June 22 in Hue, the Department will collect opinions on this issue.

Mr. Tuan said: "The Miss America pageant's organizing committee sees the bikini competition as no longer necessary at this point. They want to focus on assessing the contestants' intelligence, which is also a positive factor. In response to the feedback about Miss America's removal of the bikini competition, the Department has put forward this content to discuss and get opinions from relevant organizations and individuals."

Bikini is a familiar competition in beauty contests in Vietnam.

According to the leader of the Department of Performing Arts, bikini is a traditional competition in world beauty contests. Currently, Vietnamese law has no regulations restricting this competition.

It all depends on the organizers as well as the criteria and rules of each contest. However, in current legal documents, beauty contests prioritize intellectual, cultural and personality beauty, then physical beauty.

"We will see how the public and affected parties respond. If there is high consensus from the management agency, organizations, individuals, and the new regulations are capable of helping to achieve good management efficiency without affecting the quality of the competitions, we will institutionalize them into legal documents," said Mr. Tuan.

The management agency plans to submit a draft decree regulating performing arts activities to the Government in November.
