Vyshinsky had previously been stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship. According to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the journalist also holds Russian citizenship.
Vyshinsky's lawyer said the petition to renounce citizenship will be submitted to the Ukrainian presidency on Monday.
On May 15, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) searched the offices of RIA Novosti in Ukraine and the residences of journalists working for the news agency in the capital Kiev. On the same day, Vyshinsky was immediately arrested on charges of treason. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) accused the head of RIA Novosti of supporting opposition forces in Donetsk and Luhansk in southern Ukraine. On May 17, the court in the city of Kherson, Ukraine, issued an arrest warrant for Vyshinsky.
Dmitry Kiselev, general manager of Rossiya Segodnya, has called on the Ukrainian authorities to immediately release Vyshinsky and stop spreading false propaganda in the media on this issue. Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya News and RT radio, believes that everything that is happening in Ukraine is Kiev's retaliation for the opening of a bridge connecting mainland Russia with the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014. She also stressed that RIA Novosti Ukraine has no legal ties to Rossiya Segodnya, but only media cooperation.
