'Many rich Vietnamese are willing to spend money to buy back luxury diplomatic cars, but they "hesitate" when they have to spend a large amount of money to pay taxes and they evade taxes from authorities by creating fake documents and license plates to use.

According to information from the Ministry of Finance, as of August 15, after more than 2 months, the deadline (June 10) for diplomatic vehicles to complete procedures to revoke registration, license plates, transfer and pay taxes has passed, but the number of vehicles coming to complete conversion procedures is still very limited.

The issue of foreign diplomatic and luxury cars with fake license plates is considered a "fever" for management agencies.

Recently, District 7 Police in Ho Chi Minh City has decided to prosecute and investigate 3 individuals of supercars using fake documents out of a total of 13 luxury cars "caught red-handed" in Phu My Hung urban area.

It is known that the 13 luxury cars that were recently seized in Phu My Hung urban area all had no documents or fake license plates. Through verification, these cars were imported into Vietnam by foreign embassy staff for use for about 3 years. When their term ended, they did not bring them back to the country but sold them to those in need.

These luxury cars, when imported into Vietnam by embassies, are tax-free and have customs declarations. However, according to regulations, after these cars are sold, the buyer must complete the registration procedures and pay taxes before they are allowed to circulate.

In fact, many rich Vietnamese are willing to spend money to buy back luxury diplomatic cars but "hesitate" when having to spend a large amount of money to pay taxes and they evade taxes from authorities by creating fake documents and license plates to use.

Regarding the seizure of foreign-plate vehicles in Ho Chi Minh City, Lieutenant Colonel Doan Van Nam, head of the Economic Police Team of District 7 Police, Ho Chi Minh City, said that out of the 13 vehicles temporarily detained, 6 were vehicles with diplomatic plates, which were transferred to the traffic police for administrative penalties. If the vehicle owner has original documents stating that the vehicle was imported into Vietnam under diplomatic status, then there is no need to pay tax. When wanting to retrieve the detained vehicle, the vehicle owner will have to pay import tax and registration tax to be able to take the vehicle out.

Other sources also said that the owners of the Bentley, Porsche and Hummer supercars... are all "rich people" living in the Phu My Hung urban area, including a female singer and actress whose car was also impounded for using fake license plates.

"The papers of these vehicles are forged so sophisticatedly that when the traffic police check, it is very difficult to detect with the naked eye. Only by professional measures can the investigation agency verify the origin and expose that the vehicles are using fake papers and license plates," said Lieutenant Colonel Nam.

The incident in Ho Chi Minh City is just one story discovered among many other cases that have not been exposed.

Statistics show that only 129 out of 1,200 vehicles with diplomatic and foreign license plates came to the Customs office to declare and complete transfer procedures. This number is enough to predict the amount of vehicles with illegal diplomatic and foreign license plates circulating on the market.
