The race... less fuel consumption, more convenience

Although not admitting that this is the selling season for Tet, motorbike manufacturers in Vietnam still launch many new models. The common point of these models is the economy that has been raised as well as the utilities suitable for Vietnamese users.

Scooters are increasingly dominating the motorcycle market.

On November 15 in Da Nang, Yamaha Vietnam announced five new models. These models include Nouvo SX, Nouvo GP, Exciter GP, Jupiter Fi and Nozza. About a week ago in Ho Chi Minh City, Piaggio Vietnam introduced the luxury Vespa lines Vespa Primavera and GTS super 3v.ie. Not long before that, their luxury 946 model was also introduced. As for Honda Vietnam, from this November, they have added new colors to the Lead model. In the past, in addition to Lead, the Air Blade and Super Dream models have also been introduced.

Fuel is priority

A common point of new car models introduced to the market in Vietnam in 2013 is fuel economy, even if they are scooters. The fuel consumption figure of 50km/liter now seems to be the floor and manufacturers try to get as far away from that level as possible.

According to the announcement, the Primavera 125cc line has a fuel consumption of 64km/liter and if that is true, it can be considered a breakthrough for the Italian car company because they have never had a car line in Vietnam that has achieved such a fuel consumption level. As for Yamaha Vietnam, in a recent practical test on many roads by reporters, with 1 liter of gasoline, the Nouvo and Nozza lines of this company achieved over 53km and 57km. With the Jupiter line, the fuel consumption index is 71km/liter.

In recent times, Honda Vietnam has been recognized by consumers for its fuel-efficient vehicles. According to internal testing results, Honda said that its new vehicle lines with PGM Fi or eSP technology should consume quite little fuel. For example, the company announced that the SH Mode line saves 56% compared to similar vehicles thanks to the idling stop function and the eSP engine or Lead line has a fuel consumption level 26% lower than similar vehicles. Of course, these are numbers that the company notes as "internal testing". In the manual transmission segment, it is not known how the reality is, but Suzuki Vietnam once announced a higher level of 80km/liter for their new Viva line.

Mr. Hoang Ha, Marketing and Sales Director of Yamaha Vietnam, said that how to make a vehicle consume less fuel but still maintain strong performance when operating is considered a challenge for manufacturers. When focusing on fuel consumption, manufacturers have to sacrifice the "powerful" performance of the vehicle when accelerating. However, technology is increasingly developing and the story of a powerful vehicle that "consumes less" is not too difficult nowadays.

The trunk must be large and the lock must be convenient.

Improving the convenience of motorbikes has actually been a focus of car manufacturers in recent years and it continues to be so. If more than ten years ago, SYM had the Attila model with the fuel tank cap located on the outside, which many people considered unsafe, now many manufacturers have put the fuel tank cap on the outside as a convenience. In addition, many current motorbike models on the market, most of which are scooters, have multi-function locks. With this lock, manufacturers integrate the functions of magnetic lock, anti-theft electronic lock, trunk opening, gas cap opening...

In recent years, car buyers no longer choose the time near Tet as usual. “Customers buy cars when they need them, when they have money, and according to business records, sales have not changed significantly in the months before Tet,” said Mr. Hoang Ha, marketing director of Yamaha Vietnam.

Or the story about the trunk and saddle, Piaggio, which is fastidious in changing, now has to make the trunk larger to meet the storage needs, especially helmets of consumers. In addition to Honda with a large trunk that has no competitors like the Lead line, Piaggio or Yamaha have also designed a larger trunk, so that it can hold two half-head helmets.

Meanwhile, the saddles are also longer than the old version and slimmer to suit the body shape of many people. In addition, automatic stop mode, anti-theft lock, kickstand intervention... are considered essential for a motorbike, especially scooters today.

Previously, the warranty and maintenance period of the usual manufacturers was 12,000km or one year, but now that is no longer the case. Currently, Honda has a two-year or 20,000km warranty; Piaggio has a three-year or 30,000km warranty; Yamaha has a one-year warranty but free maintenance for three years. For the Exciter and Nouvo 135cc models, the engine warranty period is five years or 50,000km.
