Former Chinese Railways Minister Sentenced to Death

Liu Zhijun is the most senior Chinese official to be sentenced to death recently.

Former Chinese Railways Minister Liu Zhijun was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery and abuse of power.

The verdict of the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, issued on the morning of July 8, also decided to confiscate all of Liu Zhijun's assets.

Previously, according to the indictment of the Beijing People's Procuratorate, from 1986 to 2011, Mr. Liu Zhijun took advantage of his position and power to accept bribes of more than 10 million USD, causing great damage to public property and national interests.

The Liu Zhijun case has attracted special attention from Chinese public opinion. Liu Zhijun is the highest-ranking Chinese official to be sentenced to death for corruption and abuse of power in recent times./.
