After deceiving more than 100 people who wanted to go to work abroad, earning nearly 4 billion VND, Son escaped to the Czech Republic for 16 years.

The first instance verdict announced today by the Hanoi People's Court determined that in 1999, after leaving the police force, Phung Huu Son opened Minh Quang Company Limited to trade in ceramics. It had no function of sending people to work abroad, but Son, along with the chief accountant and advertising staff, sent workers to Taiwan and South Korea, collecting documents and money.

To deceive people, Son added a business registration of "labor services, job introduction". In 2000, 107 people paid more than 3.6 billion VND.

When the fraud and property appropriation were discovered, Son fled abroad and other people involved received prison sentences.

After many years of living in hiding in the Czech Republic and being tried twice for illegal entry, in October 2016, Son was deported and extradited to Vietnam.

At the trial, the court assessed that the defendant confessed honestly and sentenced him to 14 years in prison for fraud and appropriation of property.
