Poisoned by herbicide, a 15-year-old girl in Dong Nai was saved by doctors at Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC) using an immunosuppressive regimen. Doctors said the patient arrived at the hospital in a state of respiratory failure and kidney and liver failure after drinking about 50 ml of herbicide.

At the Department of Emergency Resuscitation - Endocrine Nephrology, the patient's health progressed in a bad direction, because in addition to liver and kidney damage, the lungs also showed signs of fibrosis caused by toxins.

“Along with the blood filtration method, doctors have used a strong immunosuppressive drug regimen to prevent pulmonary fibrosis from progressing. This method has proven effective,” said Dr. Hoang Thi Diem Thuy, Head of the Department of Nephrology - Endocrinology.

According to Dr. Thuy, this is a rare case of survival because most cases of herbicide poisoning are fatal. “Blood filtration can help detoxify the liver, but if not combined with immunosuppressants, pulmonary fibrosis will make it difficult for the patient to survive,” said Dr. Thuy.

After more than a month of treatment, the patient’s health has stabilized and he has been discharged from the hospital. According to doctors, long-term sequelae of COPD in this patient are inevitable.
