Former Zambian President Rupiah Banda was arrested on March 25 on charges of abuse of power after his presidential immunity was stripped by Parliament earlier this month.

Speaking to reporters, government investigation spokesman Namukolo Kasumpa confirmed: "President Rupia Banda has been formally arrested and charged in connection with an oil purchase contract that does not serve the national interest."

However, Mr. Banda was immediately released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on March 26.

In official documents, the government of incumbent President Michael Sata accused Mr. Banda of being involved in corrupt activities related to the purchase of crude oil from the Nigerian National Oil Company and taking public money to serve his presidential campaign.

Mr. Banda has also been questioned on charges of corruption, money laundering and fraud./.
