In a statement, the PCA informed the parties that the court will issue its ruling at around 11:00 local time (4:00 p.m. Hanoi time) on July 12.
On November 24, 2015, the PCA began hearings on the Philippines’ case against China over disputed islands in the South China Sea. This hearing was closed, but Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were allowed to attend as observers.

Previously, the PCA said that through reviewing the Philippines' petition, the court rejected China's argument that the dispute was not actually under the PCA's jurisdiction.
According to the PCA, the case reflects "a dispute between the two countries regarding the interpretation and application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)", and this matter falls under the jurisdiction of the PCA.
