After the US Air Force fired a series of missiles at a Syrian government airbase, on April 7, US defense officials announced that there were no specific plans to escalate military action in this Middle Eastern country.

The British news agency Reuters quoted an unnamed US defense official as saying that the attack was not a sign of a shift in President Donald Trump's priorities. Specifically, instead of focusing on domestic issues as it is now, the White House will now pay more attention to international issues.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike on one of four air bases in central Syria in response to a chemical attack in Idlib that killed dozens of civilians in the Middle Eastern country. This was the first direct US attack on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces since the civil war broke out six years ago.

In the latest development, on April 7, Homs Province Governor Talal Barazi announced that the US military attack had killed a number of people.

Speaking to AFP news agency, Mr. Barazi stated: "There have been a number of soldiers killed, but we have not yet determined the specific number."

Earlier, the official said that US missile strikes on Syrian military areas served the purposes of "armed terrorist groups" and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

He also believes that the attack did not cause "major casualties"./
