More than half a million people have been evacuated to safe shelters.

As of 7 p.m. on November 9, provinces from Phu Yen to Quang Binh had evacuated 132,860 households with 494,213 people to safe shelters to avoid the storm, as the strongest super typhoon of the century, Haiyan, was about to hit Vietnam.

At the meeting of the Forward Steering Committee to cope with storm No. 14 at 9:00 p.m. on November 9, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highly appreciated the efforts of local authorities and relevant sectors to continue to carry out the work being implemented and achieve the set requirements, especially the evacuation of people in dangerous areas to safe shelters.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested all localities and relevant sectors to continue to monitor the situation, promptly handle all situations, and absolutely not be subjective.

According to the Frontline Steering Committee for Storm No. 14, as of 7 p.m. on November 9, provinces from Phu Yen to Quang Binh had evacuated 132,860 households with 494,213 people to safe shelters.

Da Nang city alone evacuated 35,373 households with 177,821 people (135,026 residents, 42,795 students and workers), reaching 93%. Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces are closely monitoring the storm's developments to evacuate.

Ships operating in the central East Sea have entered islands to take shelter from the storm, some have moved south.

Ships operating in the North East Sea area (North of the 15th parallel, including the Hoang Sa archipelago), of which two ships from Quang Nam are moving north of the 17th parallel; 7 ships from Quang Ngai have come ashore.

The entire city of Da Nang has 1,848 vehicles with 7,432 workers that have come ashore to anchor and take shelter safely. Thus, Da Nang has no more boats at sea.

As of 7:00 p.m. on November 9, 17 hydropower reservoirs had released spillways, including 8 reservoirs with a flow rate greater than 400 m3/s. At 3:00 p.m. on November 9, Yaly Hydropower Company announced a regulatory release.

According to the Military Region 5 Command, up to this point, there have been 3 deaths (2 in Quang Nam, 1 in Quang Ngai). Units have mobilized over 31 officers and soldiers from various units to help people reinforce 46,213 houses, 181 schools, and medical stations. Evacuate 40,141 households with 157,964 people.

Particularly in the island districts of Cu Lao Cham (Quang Nam), Ly Son (Quang Ngai), and Cu Lao Xanh (Binh Dinh), 352 households with nearly 1,377 people were brought to army barracks to take shelter from the storm./.
