Two Islamic State (IS) bombers were shot dead as they drove towards their target, according to the Daily Star. The SAS gunner killed the driver instantly with a shot to the head from a distance of 1,000 meters. The bullet continued to pass through and hit the neck of the man sitting next to him. The car slowed down and stopped. Libyan soldiers accompanying the SAS then used machine guns to continuously fire at the body of the car until it exploded.

The newspaper also said that the SAS soldier only had about 20 seconds to aim and shoot the target. His failure could have led to the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians.

"It was a great shot. The distance is not a big deal but the problem is that it was a moving target," an SAS source commented. "If the sniper had missed, a lot of people would have died."

According to sources, the incident happened last month. SAS special forces are present in Libya to support militia groups in the area fighting IS. The soldiers who achieved the feat were part of the advisory team that carried out the ambushes.

SAS had previously received intelligence that IS militants were plotting an attack on Tripoli, the capital of Libya. They planned to park a car bomb near a crowded market to cause maximum casualties.

A Libyan agent provided specific timing, and helped SAS soldiers identify the target as a white 1990s Mercedes carrying a huge homemade bomb, heading east on the coastal road.
