The 2014 AFC U16 Championship brings together 12 teams representing participating countries and academies, including U16 Frenz United (Indonesia), U16 India National Team (AIFF India), U16 East Timor, U16 Home United FC (Singapore), U16 Malaysia (Harimau Muda), U16 Chonburi FC (Thailand), U16 Frenz United (Malaysia), U16 Laos Toyota FC, U16 Guangdong FC (China), U16 Mandalay Academy (Myanmar) and U16 Phnom Penh Crown FC (Cambodia).
Vietnam’s representative at the tournament is the U16 VPF team led by former player Nguyen Phuc Nguyen Chuong. In the qualifying round from May 17 to July 19, the team topped Group A with eight wins, one draw, one loss, earning 25 points to enter the semi-finals.
In this round, the Vietnamese representative crushed U16 Frenz United with a score of 3-0 in the first leg and 1-0 in the second leg to win a ticket to the final.
Nguyen Chuong and his team's opponent in the final is another representative from Malaysia, but the challenge is bigger when this is the national U16 team. The two teams will compete in a home and away format to compete for the championship.
The first leg will take place at Thong Nhat Stadium at 4:00 p.m. on August 25 and the second leg at Frenz Stadium at 8:45 p.m. local time (7:45 p.m. Vietnam time) on August 31.
Speaking before the first leg of the final, Coach Nguyen Chuong said: “This is a quality youth football tournament, helping young players have the opportunity to compete with many football backgrounds to learn and gain experience. This year, the U16 VPF team did not have many changes in their squad. My players have made a lot of progress in their skills and ability to play away from home under great pressure. In the final, we hope to continue to play effectively like the previous matches to create an advantage before the second leg.”
The winning team of this tournament receives $50,000, second place gets $25,000, third place is $12,500. In addition, there is a prize of $2,000 for the top scorer and $3,000 for the best player of the tournament.
