The United Nations General Assembly said on July 31 it would convene a conference on the crisis in Syria this week, and diplomats said the meeting could vote on a Saudi-drafted resolution that would condemn the Security Council for inaction on Damascus.
The press office of the 193-nation body said the conference would likely begin at 10am (1400 GMT) on August 3.
The General Assembly is expected to vote on a draft resolution expressing "deep concern at the escalating violence in the Syrian Arab Republic, in particular the continued widespread, flagrant and systematic violations of human rights," according to UN diplomats.

In addition, the latest draft, dated July 30 by Saudi Arabia, which is openly supporting rebel forces fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, would ask the General Assembly to "express deep concern over threats by the Syrian authorities to use chemical or biological weapons," as well as "regret the Security Council's inability to agree on measures to ensure compliance by the Syrian authorities with Security Council decisions calling for an end to the violence."
According to Western envoys, this criticism is aimed at Moscow and Beijing./.
