Speaking after a meeting of labor experts between Vietnam and Taiwan, Tsai Meng-liang said: "Vietnamese authorities expressed hope that the ban will be lifted after 10 years. We have reached a consensus that the two sides will strengthen cooperation in the field of labor."

Tsai Meng-liang said further details would be agreed at a ministerial meeting, scheduled to take place in Vietnam next April.

Previously, Taiwan had twice banned the recruitment of Vietnamese workers in 2004 and 2005 to limit the number of people who shirked their jobs and became illegal immigrants.

Taiwan currently employs about 20,000 domestic helpers and 110,000 Vietnamese workers.
