Vietnamese Embassy in the US holds discussion on Paris Agreement

At the seminar, speakers presented an overview of the negotiation process, results and historical significance of the Paris Agreement.

On January 18, the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States held a seminar to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the "Agreement to End the War and Restore Peace in Vietnam" (January 27, 1973 - January 27, 2013), abbreviated as the Paris Agreement.

At the seminar, the speakers presented an overview of the negotiation process, results and historical significance of the Paris Agreement. Taking place over 4 years, 8 months and 16 days, with 202 public meetings at the Kléber International Conference Center and 36 high-level private meetings at various locations in Paris (France), this was one of the longest and most arduous negotiations in the history of Vietnamese diplomacy.

The 1973 Paris Agreement had a very great significance for the Vietnamese revolution. The implementation of the Paris Agreement contributed significantly to the liberation of the South in April 1975 and the reunification of the country. Many lessons in the negotiations were reviewed by the delegates such as the lesson of seizing opportunities, the lesson of combining national strength with the strength of the times, the lesson of combining diplomacy and military, etc.

Concluding the discussion, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Cuong affirmed that 40 years have passed but the historical significance of the Paris Agreement remains intact. The Ambassador asked the Embassy staff and agencies affiliated to the Embassy to flexibly and creatively apply lessons learned from the Paris negotiations into practical work, contributing to the cause of building and firmly defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; promoting the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the US in the new situation./.
