(Baonghean.vn) - Colonel, US Army veteran, former Pentagon advisor Douglas Macgregor announced on November 25, calling on Washington and Kiev to participate in peace negotiations with Moscow as soon as possible.

Macgregor’s comments come as the Pentagon’s funding for Ukraine is running out after the Biden administration failed to pass a $105 billion spending package in Congress, a significant portion of which was supposed to go to Kiev. Instead, Biden was forced to sign a stopgap spending bill that only included funding for domestic government agencies.

In a post on social network X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Macgregor claimed that the US had “sent almost all of our weapons, weapons systems and ammunition to Ukraine,” stressing that Washington “did not have much left.” “The war in Ukraine is lost,” he concluded.

Sharing the same view, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Aleksey Danilov warned that Ukrainians should not deceive themselves by thinking that the West will be happy to shoulder their responsibilities in the long term. He also predicted that the longer the conflict with Moscow lasts, the more severe the damage will be to Kiev.

The latest comments from Ukraine’s top security official follow similar remarks recently made by colleagues, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently acknowledged that Ukraine’s less-than-stellar summer offensive could dampen Western enthusiasm for further support for Kiev.

Speaking to local Lviv television on Friday, Mr. Danilov stressed that Western governments hardly expected the conflict to last more than a year and a half, meaning that it is increasingly difficult for Kiev to receive financial support and aid from them at this point.

The head of Ukraine’s security service advised his compatriots not to think that Ukraine’s supporters “will feed us all our lives and we will receive aid all our lives.” Mr. Danilov concluded: “We need to grow up and decide how to develop our country.”

Speaking to CNBC on Monday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen assessed that Ukraine is “totally dependent” on Western financial aid./.
