Speaking on this occasion, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Dang Thi Bich Lien said that this is a decision of great significance for Vietnam when a type of folk song in the villages of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, closely associated with the daily activities of the people such as farming, making hats, rowing boats, pulling nets, lulling children to sleep, etc., is honored by UNESCO.
The Deputy Minister also said that Vi and Giam folk songs occupy an important position in the cultural and spiritual life of Nghe Tinh people, expressing the cultural identity of the local people, always inherited and promoted by generations in life. Vi and Giam singing is to share, dialogue, exchange, and the common concerns of the community, through which the community is closely connected.
The Deputy Minister also affirmed that Vietnam is clearly aware that from now on, Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs have become a cultural asset of humanity. Vietnam is committed to implementing an action program to preserve the vitality of this type of folk song and implementing policies to honor artisans to practice, pass on and educate the younger generation, so that the heritage will last forever, worthy of being a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
The above viewpoint was also shared by the leaders of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces at this historic moment. Mr. Nguyen Thien, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province and Ms. Dinh Thi Le Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghe An province, both expressed their emotion and pride because the Nghe Tinh Vi Giam folk songs have contributed to enriching and diversifying the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
The leaders of the two provinces also recognized the heavy responsibility as well as the need to develop a specific plan to continue to preserve and promote the values of the heritage, especially to step up propaganda and promotion so that people as well as authorities at all levels have a deeper awareness of the values of the heritage in order to promote those values, so that the folk songs of Vi and Giam Nghe Tinh will forever exist and contribute positively to the development of cultural identity as well as the sustainable development of the two provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
For his part, music researcher Tran Quang Hai said he was very proud that after quan ho, hat xoan and don ca tai tu, Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs were recognized by UNESCO. According to him, Vi and Giam folk songs have lyrics in folk poetry, are a form of antiphonal singing associated with daily activities such as singing on the La River, singing in a rowing boat, etc. The lyrics reveal the poetic nature of Vietnam, namely six-eight or six-eight-six-eight poetry. Many rhythms of Vi and Giam folk songs exude musical language, with rich melodies based on pentatonic and tetratonic scales, showing the richness of Vietnamese folk song genres.
Also at the ninth session, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee recognized 34 representative intangible cultural heritages of humanity out of a total of 46 nomination dossiers.
In addition to Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs, UNESCO has also recognized the art of drum performance and acrobatic dance Nongak (Korea), the art of making marbled paper Ebrui (Türkiye), the art of joking Askiya (Uzbekistan), the tradition of Voru steam bath (Estonia), the art of reciting Al-Zajal poetry (Lebanon)... Thus, up to now, 314 types of art have been honored worldwide for this category./.
