Men who sleep less than 6 hours/night are more likely to have reduced fertility.

Men should immediately give up the following seemingly harmless daily habits if they do not want to have low and weak sperm count.

According to statistics from the Resolve Organization of the National Infertility Association of America, 1 in 8 couples have difficulty getting pregnant. And on average, 1 in 3 cases of trouble find that the main cause is the husband.

“Normal sperm counts in men have been declining over the past few decades,” says Dr. Ajay Nangia, a urology instructor at the University of Kansas Medical Center who specializes in male infertility.

Part of the cause may stem from seemingly harmless daily habits. Here are 7 common habits that kill sperm.

1. Staying up late

People who sleep less than six hours a night face a 31 percent lower risk of conceiving than those who sleep seven to eight hours a night, according to a preliminary study in the journal Fertility & Sterility.

Simply because lack of sleep can reduce the production of the hormone testosterone, which is essential for sperm production.

But sleeping too much is not really good. Men who sleep 9 hours/night also face the reality of reduced fertility. Therefore, sleeping 7-8 hours a night is the most ideal time.

2. Lazy to eat fish

After studying the diet and semen quality of 155 men, researchers from Harvard University (USA) discovered that those who ate the most fish, especially fish rich in omega-3 such as salmon or tuna, had higher sperm counts.

Not only that, the sperm quality was also healthier than the sperm of those who ate less fish.

On the contrary, men who consume a lot of processed meats such as bacon, sausages... have the lowest sperm count and their shape is also abnormal compared to men who rarely eat these foods.

Processed meats may reduce reproductive hormones like testosterone, while omega-3 fatty acids in fish promote the formation of healthier sperm, researchers explain.

3. Drink a lot of soda

A study published in the journal Human Reproduction found that men who drank more than one soft drink a day had lower sperm motility than those who rarely or never drank it.

Eating or drinking too much sugar can lead to insulin resistance, which in turn leads to inflammation and hinders sperm motility.

In addition, Dr. Nangia also emphasized that the habit of drinking soda will increase the amount of fat in the body, reduce the ability to produce testosterone and estrogen, thereby harming male fertility.

Additionally, having too much fatty tissue around the thighs and groin can also increase the temperature in the scrotum, which can create an environment that is too warm and harmful to sperm.

4. Stress

A study by Columbia University found that sperm quality in men who are frequently stressed is significantly lower than in men who are less stressed.

Too much stress can throw reproductive hormones out of whack, or lead to the creation of inflammatory proteins that harm sperm, says Dr. Nangia.

If you're stressed, find ways to keep your worries from spiraling out of control by talking to your partner, making time for exercise, or seeing a doctor if they remain high.

5. Keep your phone in your front pocket

Keeping your phone in your front trouser pocket can reduce sperm count and reduce sperm motility, according to a review of 10 recent studies in the UK.

Accordingly, radiation emitted from phones can cause damage to sperm DNA. And the heat from a phone can also increase the temperature inside a man's private area, thereby hindering sperm production.

The solution is to keep your phone in your jacket pocket.

6. Drinking too much alcohol

A bottle of beer or glass of wine with dinner isn’t a big deal. But studies have linked heavy drinking to significantly lower testosterone levels, lower sperm counts, and fewer healthy sperm.

Drinking more than 25 drinks a week is linked to significantly reduced sperm quality, according to the results of a Danish study.

And men who drank 40 cups a week had 33% lower sperm counts and 51% fewer healthy sperm than men who drank just 1-5 cups a week.

“Alcohol is a poison,” says Dr. Nangia. And the brain isn’t the only place it affects.

This drink can also reduce testosterone levels, which can reduce a man's ability to produce sperm.
