Waiting for the Ministry of Finance to consider paying compensation to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan
This information was announced by Mr. Nguyen Van Du - judge of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi at a press conference to promote the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the SPC on the afternoon of July 7.
Regarding the progress of compensation for Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan (Bac Giang), Mr. Nguyen Van Du said: On March 18, 2015, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi accepted Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan's request for compensation for damages.
After nearly 2 months since the date of acceptance with many working sessions, on May 15, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi successfully negotiated with Mr. Chan and his authorized representative for a total compensation of more than 7.2 billion VND. The Supreme People's Court organized a public apology and correction in the press for the wrongly convicted person, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan.

On May 18, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi issued a decision on compensation for Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan with an amount of more than 7.2 billion VND. On May 25, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi transferred the compensation file to the Department of Financial Planning (SPC) and requested the Ministry of Finance to review and consider according to its authority to pay compensation to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan.
Regarding Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha (Bac Giang) sending a petition to the prosecution agencies and the press requesting clarification on whether Ly Nguyen Chung was the culprit or not and requesting to postpone the payment of compensation to Mr. Chan, Mr. Nguyen Van Du said that the process of resolving compensation for Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi had carried out in accordance with its authority and in accordance with the procedures prescribed by the Law on State Compensation.
“During the process of handling the compensation case, the Supreme People's Court of Appeal in Hanoi did not receive any application or decision requesting a temporary suspension of compensation payment to Mr. Chan,” said Mr. Du.
Mr. Bui Ngoc Hoa - Permanent Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court emphasized: "The responsibility for continuing to investigate who is the culprit belongs to the prosecution agency, but once it is determined that Mr. Nguyen Thanh Chan was wrongly convicted, the perpetrator of the case will not affect the compensation for Mr. Chan"./.
