The Democratic Party (DP) - the main opposition party in South Korea - has announced that it will launch a campaign against the government and the ruling party both inside and outside the National Assembly, due to the political deadlock arising around the new basic pension plan.

Speaking at a meeting to announce the campaign on September 24, congressman Jun Byung-hun, leader of the DP group of lawmakers in the Korean National Assembly, stated: "DP declares an all-out war against the administration of President Park Geun-hye and the ruling New World Party."

Earlier, on September 23, DP leader Kim Han-gil instructed all of his party's lawmakers to return to the National Assembly and continue the parliamentary struggle against the government, by actively preparing for parliamentary audits targeting government agencies in the coming time.

Kim Han-gil also announced that the DP will step up its campaign outside the National Assembly by launching nationwide protests together with regional leaders and DP members in local legislative assemblies.

In fact, the DP began its campaign early last month with street protests and camping in front of Seoul's city hall, amid a political deadlock surrounding allegations that the National Intelligence Service influenced the outcome of last year's presidential election.

Political tensions between parties were heightened after South Korean Prosecutor General Chae Dong-uk resigned on September 13, after the country's Justice Ministry ordered an investigation into allegations that he fathered a child out of wedlock and the government's plan - to support President Park Geun-hye's campaign pledge to raise the basic pension - was revealed./.
