Although official results have not been announced, a CPP spokesman said that according to preliminary results, the party won 68 out of 123 seats in the National Assembly. According to Cambodian election law, the party that wins a majority in the National Assembly election has the right to form the government.

“We can declare victory in this election,” CPP spokesman Khieu Kanharith told AFP.

However, compared to the previous election, the number of seats won by Prime Minister Hun Sen's CPP decreased by more than 20 seats, because in 2008 they won an overwhelming victory with 90 seats.

Previously, the opposition CNRP also declared victory, but later withdrew the statement./.
