Speaking after receiving the award, director Dang Nhat Minh emotionally said: “I feel so happy to hold this noble award in my hand. This is a very unexpected honor for me and also a common honor for Vietnamese cinema. The award is even more meaningful when it is associated with the name of a person who has made many outstanding contributions to peace and reconciliation on the Korean peninsula - the honorable Mr. Kim Dae-jung."

According to the Organizing Committee of the Gwangju International Film Festival, director Dang Nhat Minh is known to Korean audiences through the famous films "When Will October Come?" (produced in 1984) and "Missing the Countryside" (produced in 1995) which were premiered at the 2005 Gwangju International Film Festival.

One of Dang Nhat Minh's new works, "Don't Burn" (produced in 2009), also received the audience's choice award at the 19th Fukuoka International Film Festival (2009).

Named after the late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, the award is presented annually by the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center in collaboration with the Organizing Committee of the Gwangju International Film Festival (South Korea) to film directors whose works express the aspiration for freedom, peace, protection of human rights and the values of nature.

This is the third time (since 2011) that the Kim Dae-jung Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a foreign film director. Previously, director Jafar Panahi (Iranian nationality) and director Xie Fei (Chinese nationality) received the award in 2011 and 2012./.
