On March 11, a double bombing targeting a Shiite Muslim pilgrim group in the Syrian capital Damascus killed 44 people and injured about 120, according to Reuters.

The first attack occurred at a bus stop where pilgrims were waiting for buses to visit the nearby Bab al-Saghir cemetery.

A second bomb explosion occurred 10 minutes later, causing casualties among many defense personnel working in the area.

Footage released by Syrian state television showed two badly damaged buses, with blood and shoes strewn on the ground.

According to Xinhua, the Levant Swords rebel group, an ally of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebel force, claimed responsibility.

Violence shows no signs of abating in Syria despite efforts by major powers to broker a ceasefire in the region.

The last suicide bombing in Damascus took place in January, when an Islamist extremist attacked police forces in the district ofKafr Sousa killed at least seven people.
