Bombing in Iraq leaves more than 70 dead and injured
On the evening of June 18, a roadside bomb exploded in Diyala province, eastern Iraq, killing 21 people and injuring 50 others.
The explosion occurred near Baquba, the capital of Diyala province, and many victims were taken to a nearby hospital, an unnamed police officer said. As many of the injured were in critical condition, the death toll could rise.
He added that the tragedy occurred in an area with both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims living and most of the victims were Shi'ites.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing and the investigation is ongoing.
Diyala province is a hotbed of the Sunni Muslim insurgency and violence against Shiites has increased across Iraq since the beginning of this month./.
