"Ring the bell" in the highlands

January 29, 2012 16:13

(Baonghean.vn) - Attending the Central and Central Highlands Party Newspaper Conference in Gia Lai province, I coincidentally met my fellow countrymen from Nghe An. Our compatriots are not only successful in business but also in many other fields...

Mr. Duc Phuong, from Nghi Kim, Vinh City, a veteran reporter currently working as the Editorial Secretary of Gia Lai Newspaper, revealed: "A famous Nghe An tycoon in this plateau is Mr. Du Van Tai - Director of Hung Nguyen Coffee Processing Factory".

Following the introduction, I went to the Hung Nguyen coffee distribution store on Cach Mang Thang Tam Avenue. While I was amazed by the spacious premises, Ms. Do Thuy Ha (from Ha Tinh, Mr. Tai's wife) said: "My house is in a coffee processing factory. It's rare for journalists from the countryside to come visit, so let us take you to visit the factory and farm."

Central Highlands Coffee

Mr. Du Van Tai drove home right after his wife's phone call and the conversation between his fellow countrymen was full of sincerity and excitement. Sipping a cup of delicious coffee, Mr. Tai confided: "In 1978, after graduating from the University of Economics, I left my motherland Hung Lam to come here to get married and start a business. It was also a risk because of many difficulties and no place to rely on. Coming here, I strived to become the Director of Gia Lai Medical Supplies Company. When the company was equitized, my wife and I established our own business. We discussed naming our business "Hung Nguyen". It has the meaning of "Prosperity on the Highlands" but we also want to turn to the origin of Hung Nguyen, our motherland".

Mr. Tai's coffee processing factory in Pleiku City Industrial Park has a German coffee processing technology line with a capacity of 3,000 tons/year and an investment of 20 billion VND. He bought a 30-hectare land area to make a farm. There, he grows high-yield jackfruit. In addition to the 3 famous types of ground coffee products, he also produces "jackfruit candy" - a type of candy that the Tre Xanh Hotel, where the group of journalists attending the Conference stayed, ate the candy and praised it as delicious, and chose to buy it as a gift. Previously, to make candy, Hung Nguyen Enterprise had to buy each kilogram of fresh jackfruit for up to 35 thousand VND.

Therefore, the enterprise decided to grow high-yield jackfruit on the farm to proactively source raw materials. Mr. Tai confided: "I want to bring this high-yield jackfruit variety to grow widely in our hometown. Look, this farm has only been planted for 3 years, with normal fertilization, but the trees are already taller than a person's head, as big as that. By the 4th year, each tree yields several quintals of fruit!". I mentally calculated, on average, each hectare here you plant 220 trees, so this farm gives you thousands of tons of fruit. That amount of fruit is processed into finished products, exported along with coffee. "Hung Nguyen" coffee already has a distributor in Vinh City, but the fragrant, crispy jackfruit candy, and this new jackfruit variety with high productivity and economic efficiency are not known by many people in the countryside.

Nghe An people who come here to do business are still best at growing crops, raising livestock in a family style and doing mixed farming. A typical example of those who do farming is Mr. Vo Van Le (from Dien Tan, Dien Chau). He has a farm raising dozens of pigs and hundreds of quails. From land and livestock, he now has 2 "Thien Thai" branded restaurants, creating jobs for dozens of workers from his hometown.

The next afternoon, the Conference delegation stopped at Chu Prong Rubber Corporation. Mr. Tran Xuan Kiem, an administrative officer of the Corporation, introduced: "Comrade Vo Minh Son, from Tay Hieu commune, Nghia Dan, is a very talented person and is currently the Director of Thanh Binh Farm."

Meeting Vo Minh Son, he said: He followed his father to Dak Lak when he was in the 8th grade with a lot of juniors. In the highlands, he took the entrance exam to the University of Agriculture. After graduating, he worked in Gia Lai. Chu Prong Rubber Farm assigned him to be the team leader of team 2. By 1987, he had become the Party Cell Secretary and Deputy Director, then Director of Doan Ket Farm, a member of Chu Prong Corporation today. Doan Ket Farm has 300 hectares of rubber trees that always achieve high productivity and he recruited more workers from the Jarai ethnic group into his unit according to the motto "deep roots, strong roots". In 2010, he transferred to be the Director of Thanh Binh Farm - a larger farm than Doan Ket Farm (here there are 500 workers, exploiting over 1,000 hectares of rubber, 5 production teams spread over 3 communes). The farm produces an average yield of 1.8 tons of dry latex/ha.

I also met the Director of the Department of Culture Phan Xuan Vu - a native of Cong Thanh commune, Yen Thanh. Then I met Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Duong from Dien Thai (Dien Chau), currently the Head of the Military Department of the 15th Corps. The 15th Corps is stationed from South Quang Binh to Gia Lai, managing and exploiting over 36 thousand hectares of rubber, 710 hectares of coffee... I admired him - a young man who has achieved success. He waved his hand and smiled: "It's nothing, our hometown has comrade Vo Van Nguyen, currently a Colonel, Director of Company 732. The company's military strength is equivalent to a division. In 2003, our Party and State awarded the 15th Army Corps the title of Heroic Unit in the Renovation Period. Three units under the Corporation: Company 7A, Company 75 and Company 732, of which Mr. Nguyen is the director, were also awarded that noble title. We Nghe people often say that it is a great source of pride for our hometown, especially when we know that comrade Nguyen grew up from a liberation soldier, a private, a private...

Saying goodbye to Gia Lai plateau, I am even more proud of my hometown people who have gone to work far away. This Tet, every village has children who have gone to work far away to reunite with their families. Those who "bring bells to strike other lands" will also return home and always think of their homeland.
