Director Tran Luc: "To my parents, I'm just a naughty child"
It had been a long time since I had seen Tran Luc. He looked older, with more wrinkles appearing on his face. That was only natural, the man who had captivated so many girls through his roles on screen, now sitting before me, was over 50 years old. Talking to him, I saw Tran Luc as a 6-sided Rubik's cube with different colors.

1. While he was very famous and had a comfortable position in a state-owned film studio, one day Tran Luc suddenly felt too constrained, so he submitted his resignation. His father asked, have you thought it through? Tran Luc said he had thought it through, and his father said: Then quit. Taking small steps forward to establish a film studio with himself as director was a challenging turning point. At first, he did all sorts of things, from organizing events to making commercials, as long as he had money to pay his employees. But after a few years, Tran Luc suddenly realized that doing a lot doesn't mean being... great. Each person's fate is limited. So he started to scale back, disbanding many departments. Cars and machinery had to be liquidated, even if they were at a loss, they had to be sold, as long as they were compact and efficient.
2. Now, Tran Luc focuses on being compact and effective. When necessary, he calls in his comrades with "good reputations" suitable for each project, and it is really effective. Not only does he have time to look after his children, but he also continuously sees films produced by Dong A Pictures broadcast on television. Now, the company office is located right in his private house in Yen Phu village. The house is over a hundred square meters wide, built on land. The outside staircase is for company and family work. The inside staircase is reserved for foreign guests to rent. I joke, then he doesn't need to make films to make a living. Tran Luc laughed, saying that making films has become ingrained in his blood, how can he give it up. Now Dong A Pictures' films are occupying the "prime time" on VTV. "Big brother U70" with popular faces like Chanh Tin, Diem My, Huynh Truong Thinh, Mac Can is attracting audiences. "In stock", Tran Luc already has "Making a rich husband" and many other "dishes" ready to serve guests. But it turns out that Tran Luc is not only passionate about films. He is also interested in many other things.
In the house, he hung antique clocks, old watches. Then the bicycle, the tall bike he used to ride around West Lake every morning, cost almost as much as a motorbike. And the paintings, large-sized paintings by artist Hoang Hong Cam, were hung solemnly. Those were paintings containing many stories about a talented and ill-fated artist friend. Among many artists, Tran Luc liked Hoang Hong Cam's paintings, not because of their simplicity but because they contained stories. They were warm and more importantly, they were Hoang Hong Cam's last paintings. Someone came to his house, liked the painting and wanted to buy it. Tran Luc just shook his head, because when he bought his friend's paintings, it was because Tran Luc liked them, not because he was "plotting" to do business. Among those paintings, there was a small-sized sketch of Tran Luc's portrait by Hoang Hong Cam. Tran Luc said that when he painted this painting, Hoang Hong Cam was lying down for treatment. The lines still showed the trembling of his hands. But Tran Luc really liked this picture, he chose it as his avatar on his personal page.
3. But to create a multifaceted, colorful Tran Luc, we cannot fail to mention the story of... family. After the failed marriages, Tran Luc is now living with his third wife. I asked Tran Luc, is he a playboy? Tran Luc shook his head. He said: "Three marriages is a bit much, but that's fate." Then he confessed that those "getting married" times caused him sad days, even confusion. But then, family is still the place he returns to, the most peaceful refuge. There, People's Artist Tran Bang said nothing, just silently bought more rare bird cages to hang and invited his son to comment on the chirping of each species. As for his mother, she held back a sigh of love for her son. "To my parents, I'm just a naughty child," Tran Luc said. In addition to loving paintings, Tran Luc also... loves his children. When he decided to let his son participate in the reality TV show "Dad! Where are we going?", he accepted that many people thought he was "showing off his child". But because he saw that his son liked it, he was willing to indulge him. Tran Luc did not like to raise his son in the "industrial chicken" style. Therefore, whenever he had the chance, he let his son play and explore life outside.
But whether he is obsessed with his children or with being a director, every time I meet Tran Luc, I always see that he puts a lot of thought into movies. When the public criticizes the trashy comedies released in theaters, Tran Luc openly expresses that we must thank those who have provided a menu for the audience who love movies shown in theaters. Because attracting young people to the theater is also a success in nurturing the habit of going to the theater for the audience in the future.
Regarding the current trend of movies being marked 16+, 18+, etc., Tran Luc thinks that we seem to be abusing these recommendations. In foreign countries, these recommendations are very accurate. In our country, if we cut out a few scenes that are a bit too “over the top”, it’s done. Meanwhile, the issue that needs to be noted for recommendations is the story of the movie, not just a few images.
