According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, Tran Quoc Tuan led troops three times to defeat the Yuan-Mongol invaders from the north, liberating the country in 1257, 1285, and 1287.
In April of the year Ky Suu (1289), he was given the title of Hung Dao Dai Vuong. Near the end of his life, he retired to Van Kiep, where he was granted a fief (now in Hung Dao commune, Chi Linh town, Hai Duong province) and died in 1300, at the age of 70.
After Tran Hung Dao died, the Tran Dynasty court bestowed upon him the title "Grand Master, Grand Master, National Duke Nhan Vu Hung Dao Dai Vuong".
He was honored by the people of the whole country as "Saint Tran" and temples were built in many places.
After receiving it, the army and people of Truong Sa island district invited the statue of Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan to place at Truong Sa pagoda, Truong Sa district, Khanh Hoa province.
