Extra teaching, extra learning, banned or not banned?

Extra teaching and learning is a topic that has been discussed over and over again in the press, even in the National Assembly. But up to now, it has not been fundamentally resolved.

This situation itself shows some confusion in solving the problem. This situation is due to different streams of opinions on different manifestations of extra teaching and learning, and public opinion is also different, including opinions that consider extra teaching and learning as something extremely negative, extremely evil, and need to be eliminated. In my opinion, those opinions are one-sided, stemming from two possibilities: First, the judge has not yet recognized and evaluated the problem comprehensively, comprehensively in a multi-faceted view; Second, the judge only has the habit of looking at the negative side of the problem, lacking a goodwill, generosity, and humanity. Of course, the reason for this view is because the education sector has long had many things that have made people worried, including the issue of extra teaching and learning.

Personally, I think there is no reason to ban extra teaching and learning, because it is a need and a right. Extra teaching and learning, first of all, is the wish of parents and students. If there is no demand, how can there be supply? No one can think of opening a class if they do not grasp the needs of students, and no one can think of opening a class and then force students to go there. The proof is that while we ban extra teaching and learning in schools, students still flock to exam preparation centers outside. Here I am talking about the beginning of the story. And of course, never completely deny the significance of extra teaching and learning in the process of forming and perfecting students' knowledge, capacity and qualities.

In our time, cram schools sprung up like mushrooms, with a classroom sometimes having hundreds of students. And it was these cram schools that played a very important role in opening the university gate for many people. Even those who are protesting against extra teaching and learning today, most likely entered the university gate thanks to the support of these cram schools. We have accepted and rejoiced in that, so why can't we continue?

Someone opens a class, someone teaches extra classes, first of all to meet the needs of the students. And the teacher, it may seem pragmatic, but it must be said, has extra income to cover hundreds of expenses. This is normal, and even very good when the income from salary is not enough to ensure life at even the minimum level. On the more positive, humane side, I think that extra teaching also creates opportunities, creates pressure for teachers to constantly learn to hone their expertise. That is only beneficial for teachers, students and the industry. When extra teaching and extra classes are banned, teachers can certainly improve their income with other jobs. But I really can't bear to see our teachers having to be shippers, sell online goods, sell life insurance, sell multi-level marketing, drive Grab taxis... I know many teachers who are in such a situation.

Extra teaching and learning also creates another channel of communication between the school, teachers and parents.

In addition, extra teaching and learning also creates an additional communication channel between schools, teachers and parents, in order to better control children, avoid children playing around out of control, sometimes leading to neglect of study, even leading to social evils. Another question is, while we prohibit schools from organizing extra teaching and learning, we grant licenses to outside centers? This can easily lead to misunderstandings that we have lost faith in educational institutions in our system; that we have lost faith in our teachers. Moreover, it is also a "noble profession", why can people in the medical profession, doctors, nurses, caregivers... work extra but teachers cannot teach extra? Why can public medical facilities open medical examination and treatment services upon request but the education sector cannot open extra classes upon request? Above we talked about needs, now we talk about rights. It should be said that the restriction of extra teaching and learning at public educational institutions not only makes teachers, but also students not guaranteed the right to study. And teachers are also somewhat limited in their right to self-training and self-development.

I don't dare to generalize, but if we look at licensed tutoring and learning centers, who can guarantee that all of them meet all the quality criteria, at least compared to educational institutions managed by the industry? The reality is that, at many centers today, many of the teachers are new graduates, or have been out of school for several years but cannot find a place in schools, so they join them. And the centers obviously like to recruit these "teachers", because their demands for remuneration are certainly not too high. The knowledge, skills, experience, especially the experience of these people will of course be somewhat inferior to that of teachers in schools with a long history. When we ban tutoring and learning in formal educational institutions, it means that we are sending students to places where the quality of teaching and learning is not necessarily the best.

Of course, it is also important to note this: In fact, those who oppose extra teaching and learning more or less have their reasons. That is when they look at the ethics and conscience of teachers revealed through extra teaching and learning. Public opinion has repeatedly talked about teachers forcing students to take extra classes using familiar and inhumane tricks. That needs to be condemned. But the problem is, why don't we think of a management plan to avoid these phenomena? Why don't we have a way for teachers to always put professional ethics and love for students above all else. Of course, this is not easy when we are witnessing a life of chaotic values. In addition, let's ensure teachers a decent life with their own salary.
