I. READING COMPREHENSION (4.0 points)

Read the excerpt:

[Introduction: Le Minh Khue is one of the typical writers of the renovation period. Her stories focus on everyday life, have the ability to cover and evoke many thoughts about life and world affairs with diverse narrative art, flexibly using different perspectives...

The short story Ga xep tells the story of Mr. Lang. He lived in a house that had been his grandfather's, witnessed his father's mysterious disappearance, his mother's weary waiting, and his younger brother's sacrifice. At the age of 16, he joined the army, then became a journalist, and at the end of his life, returned to live in the old house, haunted by his father's soul and memories of his mother. Mr. Lang had two daughters who were good students and obedient, but they made him hopeless because they both married foreigners and followed their husbands to foreign lands. Being busy chasing love, they did not feel their father's loneliness when they demolished the old house, built him "a colorful and strange house" and "spent money to take care of him"...]

He had traveled too much. Perhaps it was his fault. He had relied on his younger brother, a martyr during the war against the French, to help his resume get through the most difficult border gate, to practice his profession, to travel. So many worries in strange lands. Once in a hotel corridor near Siberia, a young woman got to know him. When they parted, she wrote down her address in Russian. Her hometown was in the upper reaches of the Amua River, the part that flowed through the great Russia. Until now, he still felt unsteady when thinking about a certain village on the Amua River. How could he get to that river? Where was it, a village like a speck of dust on a vast land? After the war, he traveled everywhere. Even on a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean, he met Vietnamese people. In a remote village near the Amazon forest, a man stopped his car. The sword-shaped eyebrows typical of the Northern Delta, the small, slanted eyes like two threads on the high, red cheekbones… A true Vietnamese who left in the fifties. The tears of that wandering man fell on his hand when he held his hand. He had forgotten Vietnamese. Behind him was an Indian woman with cheeks like sculpted clay. He sympathized with the lonely people who had to adapt to a foreign land. But one time in New York, he accidentally turned to the other side when he saw some Vietnamese people coming. He was embarrassed and did not want to talk. The bomb of a multi-sided war had exploded in his country. People scattered all over the planet, carrying hatred, leaving behind many suspicions.

How unfortunate is the land where people cannot stay in one place. They give birth to children in one house, grow old and die in that house, with things that “work well after twenty years”.

He told his children about his thoughts about home and land. They both laughed. God created humans on earth. The same plants and the same sun. Whoever wants to live can live wherever they want. The homeland is this earth. Dad is old, he thinks too narrowly. We are like T-shirts and jeans. Wherever there are people, we live well. At this time, the whole earth will wear T-shirts and jeans. Borders will no longer have any meaning, Dad.

He was silent. They had their reasons. But they were cruel enough to put him in their t-shirt and jeans trend. They were killing him by destroying his old house, packing their bags and leaving when death was flapping its wings over his head.

He dozed in the unfamiliar bed with its high pillows in his new home. A shadow brushed his face, real, not a feeling. And a groan of pain, he heard it clearly.

He sat up and suddenly cried out: Father! But all was quiet again.

*

When his two children had just left for love, he stayed in the old one-story house, so old that when it rained for a long time, the tiled roof gave off a damp, mossy smell. He went out with some old friends, and he felt safe in the moldy house, sitting there drinking tea and reading old books. He waited for his children to return. The dead, the real owner of the house, also felt safe hiding behind the door of the table, behind the wooden cabinet from the beginning of the century. He stayed in the house, and every night he felt many loving eyes watching him. He lived with the spirits, and waited...

The time when he wore tiny shorts, stripped naked, and climbed the tamarind tree in front of the house with his younger brother, shaking its branches so that the ripe tamarinds would fall on the roof tiles, was the time when people found it reasonable to be born. That peaceful time was only a moment. He did not feel his life was peaceful at all. There was always something hitting his ears: the sound of airplane sirens, the sound of bombs tearing at his eardrums, the call to evacuate, the call to leave, the call to boycott someone, to praise someone, the loudspeaker announcing the trains at the station, his mother's voice urging: hurry up, children! The life of a Vietnamese person is full of hurried sounds. Life is like a market train, luggage is picked up temporarily, faces are tired. The train sometimes stops at a small station for people to get off to relax a bit. In that small station, there is a moment of peace that seems unreal. People build a house, plant a crop of vegetables, get married, have a grandchild, have a little memory… Then they leave everything behind, board a train that runs without a fixed stop. But strangely, he often forgets the screeching sound of the wheels grinding on the fateful railway. The little peace at the train stations lives more intensely than the fear.
