Anti-Russian sanctions have caused catastrophic damage to the Croatian economy, the country's former president, Stepan Mesic, said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

“From the very first day, Croatia's imposition of restrictive sanctions against Moscow has been disastrous for our economy. The country's GDP in 2014 amounted to $57 billion, and in 2015 it fell to $49 billion. There is not a single company in Croatia that is not subject to anti-Russian sanctions,” the former Croatian president said.

Izvestia newspaper reported that Croatian exports to Russia previously amounted to more than $400 million, and now it is about $200 million.

The restrictions on Moscow are illegal, as they were introduced by the West without UN approval, Mr. Mesic added.

Stepan Mesic was President of Croatia from 2000-2010.
