Ram Temple, also known as Thuong Temple, is located in the southwest at the foot of Tung Son Mountain, Quynh Van Commune, Quynh Luu District (Nghe An Province). The temple is a place to worship Saint Phung Hung - a national hero who led the uprising to overthrow the Tang Dynasty's rule, and was honored by the people as Bo Cai Dai Vuong.
Long ago, Ram Temple in Quynh Van commune was built next to the old mandarin road. According to old history and genealogy of Ram Temple, Phung Hung was from Duong Lam (now Duong Lam commune, Son Tay, Hanoi), with the given name Cong Phan. Phung Hung's father was Phung Hap Khanh, a virtuous and talented man who participated in the Hoan Chau uprising led by Mai Thuc Loan in Nghe An. Phung Hung was a man of extraordinary health, extraordinary spirit, intelligence, and early determination to expel the invaders and liberate the country. In his youth, he killed a tiger that was causing havoc in the area.
On January 21 (year 798), there were Kunlun and Cha Va bandits harassing in the south, so he went on patrol to guard the areas, and when he reached Tung Son village, it was dark and he had to camp there. The guards informed Phung Hung that there were many tigers and leopards in this area. At night, a tiger suddenly appeared. Phung Hung fought alone with the tiger but was still defeated. At that moment, 3 more tigers rushed in to help fight, Phung Hung sacrificed. Four tigers carried his body to the top of Thach An mountain for burial, but the mountain was rocky so the tigers could not dig it up, so they took Phung Hung down to Long Hai Son in Quynh Tu village (now Quynh Xuan commune, Quynh Luu) for burial. The next night, the tigers continued to bury more soil. The grave became bigger and bigger. The people in the area built a temple to worship Bo Cai Dai Vuong. After his death, Bo Cai Dai Vuong was very spiritual and helped the people. Nowadays, there are still stone stele engraved with the words: "Gia Long 18th year creation" and stone incense burner "Huong hoa thien thu", two stone fang pillars with parallel sentences carved on four sides. The ancient temple was built with 5 buildings: the harem, the upper palace, the left and right palaces, and the lower palace.
From 2006 to 2008, Ram Temple was restored with two buildings: the Worship Hall and the Upper Hall; the Middle Hall, Lower Hall, Left and Right Halls will continue to be built.
Since 2008, Quynh Luu district has restored the Ram Temple festival. The festival will take place on January 21 every year. With hundreds of years of history, Ram Temple is a place for cultural activities and spiritual beliefs of local people and neighboring areas. Every year, many ritual activities take place here, attracting a large number of people and tourists from all over to attend.
With those great values, as well as to preserve and promote long-term historical and cultural values, in 2014, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee decided to grant a certificate of recognition as a provincial historical relic to Ram Temple.
