(Baonghean.vn) - On Thursday, January 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the number of new Ebola cases in the three most affected West African countries, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, is showing signs of decreasing. WHO assessed this as one of the "first optimistic signs" in the fight against this pandemic.

Despite the positive signs in the fight against Ebola, the WHO said it was too early to celebrate. “The fact that there are fewer cases does not mean that the fight against Ebola is over,” said Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesman for the UN agency in Geneva. The decline in new cases is the first positive sign and a result of the efforts of health workers in recent months, Jasarevic said.

In this report, WHO recorded at least 8,459 deaths from Ebola out of 21,329 cases worldwide. Most of the deaths were concentrated in 3 West African countries: Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. According to the report, this week, 42 new Ebola cases were detected in Guinea and 184 in Sierra Leone. This is known to be the lowest level since August 2014.

In Liberia, there have been very few new cases recently. Last week, only eight new cases were reported to health authorities, a significant drop from the more than 300 cases reported in a single week in August and September.

To date, Liberia has the highest number of Ebola deaths with 3,556 deaths out of 8,326 cases, followed by Guinea with 2,817 deaths. In Sierra Leone, the Ebola epidemic has severely affected the country with 10,150 cases of infection, including 3,067 deaths. At this time, the three West African countries continue to make efforts to treat and prevent Ebola virus patients.
