Foot and mouth disease is spreading in Tan Ky
(Baonghean) -According to information from the Nghe An Veterinary Department, from August 20 to September 5, 2011, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) occurred in two communes, Nghia Hop and Nghia Dung (Tan Ky district, Nghe An).
By September 14, the disease had spread to other communes, namely Nghia Thai, Nghia Hoan and Tan Long. The total number of infected livestock was 309. The number of dead and destroyed animals was 97 (1 cow, 1 calf, 79 calves, 15 pigs, 1 goat).
In particular, Nghia Dung commune is a commune that mainly raises breeding buffaloes. Most of the sick buffaloes are in the lactation period, so the number of calves from 1 to 4 months old that are breastfeeding are infected (75).
The cause of the epidemic, according to the Tan Ky District Veterinary Station, the epidemic started in Nghia Hop commune due to the presence of pathogens in infected cattle, in the livestock environment, when favorable conditions were met, the disease spontaneously developed. The number of sick cattle and dead calves were due to not being vaccinated in the spring of 2011 (because during this time, buffaloes and cows were pregnant, so people did not vaccinate).
The Veterinary Department has increased staff to Tan Ky district and communes to implement disease prevention measures. The district and commune also announced on the mass media about the FMD situation in the locality; signed a commitment with the owners of sick buffaloes and cows to keep them in captivity, care for them and control them in the barn, not to graze them, slaughter them or sell them to spread the disease. Set up guard posts on the main roads leading to and from the epidemic hamlets; carry out sanitation and disinfection work in the epidemic area and neighboring areas. Organize foot-and-mouth disease vaccination for livestock in the epidemic area, high-risk areas and old epidemic areas.
