Dengue fever outbreak occurred in Quynh Lien commune (Quynh Luu)

(Baonghean.vn) -In the past few days, dengue fever has occurred in 4 hamlets of Quynh Lien commune, Quynh Luu district. The first case was detected on August 20 in hamlet 8, then spread to hamlets 3, 4 and 6 of this commune, so far there have been 22 people infected. This is the first outbreak to occur in the province as well as in the entire northern provinces in 2012.

In 2009 and 2010, a dengue fever outbreak also occurred in Quynh Lien commune; the continued resurgence of the epidemic has shown that the local environmental sanitation work is not good. Immediately after receiving information about the first case, the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the Nghe An Department of Health directed the Provincial Center for Preventive Medicine to directly coordinate with the District Health Center and the Quynh Luu District government to investigate and monitor the source of infection. The investigation results showed that: The mosquitoes transmitting the disease here are Ades agypti mosquitoes, 90% of the houses have mosquitoes and the mosquito density index is 3 mosquitoes per house; 36% of the houses have larvae, the larvae nests are concentrated in waste water containers, broken tires, jars, etc.

In addition to the epidemiological investigation, health agencies promptly admitted and treated patients, and at the same time implemented measures to contain the epidemic, preventing it from spreading in the area. 22 patients with typical symptoms of dengue fever were taken to the commune health station for centralized treatment or treated at home under the supervision of health workers. Currently, the health of the above patients has stabilized.

To contain the epidemic, the Provincial Center for Preventive Medicine together with the Quynh Luu District Medical Center directed the commune's epidemic prevention committee to organize propaganda and mobilize people to focus on environmental sanitation, clear sewers, turn over unused water containers, release fish into wells to kill mosquito larvae, put salt and oil in water-holding containers, etc.

Doctor Le Thanh Ha - Director of the Provincial Center for Preventive Medicine, said: Having identified the dengue fever outbreak early, the Provincial Center for Preventive Medicine has focused on urgent measures to prevent the spread of the disease by killing mosquito larvae and providing 300 liters of chemicals to spray in hamlets of Quynh Lien commune and communes at risk of the epidemic such as Quynh Phuong, Quynh Bang... However, according to Doctor Le Thanh Ha - this is only a temporary measure.

Currently, there is no specific treatment for dengue fever… Reality has shown that the most effective remedy for epidemic areas is for the government and people to be proactive, raise their sense of responsibility, and join together to fight, suppress, and eradicate dengue fever as soon as the Ades agypti mosquito is still a larva, not waiting until an epidemic occurs to worry about suppressing it.
