Before the US side announced its approval to transfer the patrol ship USCGC Morgenthau to Vietnam, we had received a number of ships from foreign partners.

The CSB 8003, which was donated by South Korea, is currently the second largest displacement patrol vessel of the Vietnam Coast Guard (only behind the DN-2000). This was originally a Han River-class ship, built in 1983, and upgraded and refitted by the Hong Ha Shipbuilding Company (Factory Z173). |
The ship is 81.5 m long; 9.8 m wide; has a full load displacement of 1,400 tons; is equipped with two engines with a capacity of nearly 5,300 horsepower, for a maximum speed of 20.7 nautical miles/h. |
Hayato is the first of three fisheries surveillance ships provided by the Japanese Government to Vietnam in 2015. It was originally a fishing vessel numbered 7JLH, built in 1994. Its Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is 431619000 and its International Maritime Organization (IMO) number is 9088093. |
The Hayato has a full load displacement of 454 tons; length of 56 m; width of 9 m; draft of 4.8 m; maximum speed of 11.5 nautical miles/h; cruising speed of 9.9 nautical miles/h; continuous operating time at sea of up to 2 months. The ship is equipped with many modern devices such as electric compass, bow propeller that helps the ship rotate 360 degrees, radar system, global communication, depth gauge... |
Most recently, on March 17, the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Force received the Yuzan Maru ship, also donated by Japan. The ship was built in 1996 at the Miho Factory in Shizuoka Province. It has a length of 65.19 m; width of 9.3 m; draft of 5.34 m; height of 4.3 m; engine capacity of 2,500 horsepower; maximum load capacity of 499 tons, total load of 619 tons; economic speed of 15 nautical miles/h. |
Before being transferred to Vietnam, the Yuzan Maru patrol ship was originally under the Japanese Fisheries Agency. The ship had an identification number (IMO) 9135212 and a Maritime Mobile Service Identification (MMSI) code of 431836000. After being repaired by Factory X46, the ship received a new designation, Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance 102, and was assigned to the Fisheries Surveillance Sub-Department of Region 1. |
In addition, in 2016, there is also information that the US will soon build and transfer to Vietnam small patrol boats Defiant 45 with a length of 45 feet (13.7 m); width of 15 feet (4.6 m). This type of boat is designed for the tasks of patrolling and protecting river ports, fire fighting, protecting the coast, and enforcing the law at sea. It has a very high speed of up to 74 km/h. However, it is still unclear whether the above boats have arrived in Vietnam or not? |
In case everything goes well and the USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC 722) is delivered soon, with a displacement of 3,250 tons, this will be Vietnam's largest patrol ship (surpassing the DN 2000), and also larger than the Erimo PL 02 (displacement of 2,066 tons) that Malaysia just received from Japan. |
