Dien Chau successfully restored lotus peanut variety

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of November 12, the Department of Science and Technology and the People's Committee of Dien Chau district organized a workshop on the 2015 winter-spring lotus peanut model.

Lotus peanuts are a long-standing traditional variety of Dien Chau farmers with delicious quality, higher fat and protein content than hybrid peanuts and are favored by consumers, ensuring export standards. However, due to poor preservation and improper planting techniques, the variety has degenerated. After 4 years of research, collection and selection by the Department of Science and Technology and the People's Committee of Dien Chau district, this peanut variety has been restored and tested on an area of ​​2 hectares in the land of Hamlet 7, Dien Hoa. The outstanding characteristics of lotus peanuts are good resistance to flooding, large tubers, thin skin, and a growing period of only 90 days. Although planted in harsh winter weather conditions, the yield of lotus peanuts reached 25.4 quintals/hectare, 3.3 quintals/hectare higher than the control field. It is calculated that after deducting costs, farmers earn 10.3 million VND more profit per hectare of lotus peanuts than the control field.

The successful restoration of the local purebred lotus peanut variety is very important for Dien Chau to expand the area and build a brand for this product.
