Actor Mifune was awarded a star alongside Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper and Quentin Tarantino. The honor puts Mifune in the club of Japanese stars immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Mifune often appeared on the silver screen as intense, rude, but selfless characters. He had fans around the world, including George Lucas, the creator of the "Star Wars" series, who invited him to play the roles of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader when producing the first film in the series.
Mifune attracted international attention when he began collaborating with director Kurosawa. He acted in films from the age of 16 in Kurosawa's projects such as Drunken Angel, Rashomon and Yojimbo.
When talking about Mifune's acting power, director Kurosawa commented: "An ordinary Japanese actor might need many shots to make an impression on the audience, but Mifune only needs one-third of that."
Not only in Japan, Mifune also worked abroad, participating in acting in Mexico and the United States. In the United States, he was recognized for his role as Toranaga in the TV series Shogun, starring alongside Richard Chamberlain (the actor who played Father Ralph in the series ''The Thorn Birds'').
His portrayal of the indomitable Samurai in the film ''Yojimbo'' also inspired the show Saturday Night Live to create a Samurai character, portrayed by comedian John Belushi in the late 1970s.
In 1965, Mifune collaborated for the last time with Kurosawa, but he continued acting until 1995. He died in 1997 in Mitaka, near Tokyo.
