The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion announced that it has successfully prepared leukocyte-filtered platelet pool. This is a blood product that brings practical benefits in the treatment of blood diseases, especially at a time when dengue fever is complicated and the need for platelet transfusion is always high.

To treat thrombocytopenia, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has regularly provided hospitals in the Northern region with platelet pool preparations and platelet concentrates separated from a single donor.

Compared with these two preparations, leukocyte pool platelet concentrate has its own advantages. Specifically:

Minimizes the risk of transfusion reactions: While fresh pool platelet concentrates only remove about 70% of white blood cells, leukocyte-filtered pool platelet concentrates have been filtered and removed about 99% of white blood cells.

This will minimize the risk of transfusion reactions that may occur to patients when using platelet pools such as fever, rash, hives, acute pneumonia (TRALI)... making it safer for patients with multiple blood transfusions.

Long shelf life: Platelet concentrates are a preparation with a fairly short shelf life (3 days), platelet concentrates separated from a donor are 5 days… therefore, during long holidays, or in emergency cases, platelet shortages often occur.

Leukocyte-filtered platelet pool can be used for 5 days from the day of blood collection, compared to platelet pool which is 2 days longer and equal to platelet concentrate from a donor. Although it only has 2 more days of use compared to platelet pool, this is very significant for a product with a short shelf life like platelets, contributing to overcoming the shortage of products, promptly meeting treatment needs, especially during long breaks.

Reasonable price: The leukocyte-filtered platelet pool has a platelet count that meets the therapeutic transfusion dose equivalent to the platelet concentrate separated from a donor, but the price is only over 50% of the cost of a unit of platelet concentrate separated from a donor.

Compared to platelet pool, leukocyte filtered platelet pool is nearly 3 times more expensive, but has 2 times more platelet count, is safer and has a longer shelf life.

Platelet concentrate is an indispensable preparation for patients with blood diseases such as bone marrow failure, thrombocytopenic purpura, acute leukemia... and is very necessary for a disease that many people can get, dengue fever. Patients at risk of life-threatening need platelet transfusion when the platelet count is below 20 Giga/l.

With leukocyte filtration platelet pool, doctors and patients have another option in using platelet preparations at a reasonable price while still ensuring treatment effectiveness.

Currently, leukocyte-filtered platelet pool is only used in some special reserved cases (health insurance agencies are considering payment). In the coming time, leukocyte-filtered platelet pool will certainly contribute to improving the quality of blood products, ensuring blood transfusion safety and treatment effectiveness.
