Effects of oranges

According toToday, a medium orange has 73 calories, 1g protein, 17g carbohydrates, 3g fiber (12% daily requirement), 232mg potassium (9%), 83mg vitamin C (110%)

According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, you should get about 20% of your daily water intake from food. Meanwhile, oranges contain 86% water. Therefore, Ekta Singhwal, a nutritionist at Ujala Cygnus Hospital Group (India), assessed that regularly eating oranges in winter to replenish water, is beneficial for your skin during the dry winter months.

Dr Sanjay Kumar, consultant general practitioner, Cygnus Laxmi Hospital (India), toldIndian Express, consuming oranges daily during winter can provide the body with essential nutrients such as vitamin C, boosting the immune system against flu.

“The significant amount of vitamin C in an orange also promotes collagen production. Oranges also contain antioxidants, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals that contribute to overall health,” says Dr. Kumar.

The presence of many antioxidants, including flavonoids and carotenoids, helps neutralize free radicals in the body, fight oxidative stress, promote cellular health and may prevent chronic diseases.

The fiber content of oranges also helps regulate blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for people with diabetes.

Limitations when eating too many oranges

While oranges are generally healthy, consuming too much can lead to digestive problems due to their fiber content, Dr. Kumar says. People with certain medical conditions should also eat oranges in moderation. They are an acidic fruit, and people with gastroesophageal reflux disease may experience discomfort after eating oranges.

Other drawbacks include potential dental problems due to the acidic nature of oranges. Singhwal added that people with kidney problems should be cautious due to the high potassium content in oranges.
